WebHealth:About
From WebHealth
Webhealth is a wiki format health book on the Internet. You may wonder about the medical content. It has been written and accumulated since 2002 and has been on the Internet since then. In case you wonder about who I am here is a brief summary: "Dr. Ray Schilling was born in 1945 in Tübingen, Germany. He grew up in Southwest Germany and returned to his home town to study medicine at the Eberhard-Karls-University Medical School where he graduated in 1971. He wrote his thesis in endocrinology to obtain his M.D. (1), and published a paper in English in an abridged version in the Acta Endocrinologica (2). Following his internship in Germany, he immigrated into Canada in 1972. He started a post-doctoral cancer research position at the prestigious Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto from the fall of 1972 onwards until the end of 1995. He published three papers in the area of cell immunology and cell separation methods using a mouse model (3,4 and 5).
Ray always felt drawn to practicing medicine and to prepare for this he enrolled in a 2 1/2 year family medicine program equivalent (mixed internship program) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. After the LMCC he moved to western Canada to practice family medicine for 16 years in a suburb of Vancouver, B.C. In 1983 he trained at the University of British Columbia in clinical hypnosis and joined as a member of the Canadian Society of Clinical Hypnosis. He incorporated this knowledge into his general practice and applied it in patients with various disorders. In 1994 he joined the Worker's Compensation Board of British Columbia as a medical advisor in occupational health while continuing his clinical work in walk-in-clinics. There he perceived that patients have a need to know more about their medical conditions than the busy general practitioner can communicate to them under the time constraints of modern medical practice."
It is hoped that other medical professionals will join in this project of helping patients worldwide. It must be emphasized here that it is the responsibility of the readers to look after their well being, which involves seeing a practicing physician when there is an illness. However, your responsibility does not stop there as following the instructions of the health care provider is important. At the same time it is the responsibility of all of us to engage in disease prevention as this is much more powerful on the longterm than attempting to cure any disease. Take the example of obesity. It occurs by faulty dietary habits (from overeating calorie rich foods) and the lack of exercise. This leads to the metabolic syndrome, which is the first step towards developing diabetes a few years later. The doctor can treat diabetes when it is diagnosed. However, studies have already shown that the best medicines including insulin and pills, which help to lower blood sugar are not prolonging life expectancy. On the other hand simple steps like a persistent weight reduction program coupled with exercise will tackle obesity. Doctors know that these simple steps will reverse the altered metabolism back to a normal metabolism and life expectancy will improve. WebHealth.com is a medical wiki that we hope will evolve as users contribute. The monthly Health Newsletter, which used to be a separate publication, but is now incorporated into WebHealth is an effort to summarize research findings that affect our health. It includes new insights into diseases, new treatment modalities and conceptual changes in medicine, all in plain language. It is hoped that you will enjoy reading about medicine, prevention and medical news. If you have medical expertise, please feel free to participate in the WebHealth wiki.
