Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Ankle pain is usually caused by a form of trauma. This can include a minor strain/sprain injury to a fracture of one or more of the bones.

Other common causes can include:

  • Contusion injuries;
  • Nerve compression injuries;
  • Nerve entrapment (eg. Tarsal tunnel syndrome);
  • Osteoporosis;
  • Arthritis;
  • Artery hardening (eg. Endstage Buerger’s Disease or uncontrolled diabetes);
  • Varicose veins;
  • Cancer – A rare cause of ankle pain cause by tumours metastasized in the ankle region.
